November Pop-Up Arts Newsletter…stories and history

November Pop-Up Arts Newsletter. Well I skipped October Arts News as I spent a month in New York – staying in the East Village minding a friend’s 5th floor apartment and her little dog named Cleo; renting a warehouse with two Aussie friends above a noodle factory in Chinatown; and having 5 days in the cutest little apartment in an elegant brownstone in Brooklyn. All charming and exciting. All within an easy walk to the subway. When I was there I also met up with Moshe Rosenzveig (Director, Head On) and his gorgeous wife Anita and delightful daughter Noah at Photoville in DUMBO. What a Festival. What a town! Although Sydney in Spring was most lovely to come home to. November has to be the prettiest month don’t you think? Here are exhibitions full of stories and history…

Anne Ferran. Christening Robe
This extensive survey exhibition covers Anne Ferran’s works from a career spanning almost 30 years. Her practice includes photography, installation and text. My favourite series is the collection of x-rayed colonial christening gowns, wedding dresses, bodices and feminine undergarments. Delicate and a touch melancholic.

September Pop-Up Newsletter. Spring in Sydney…

SEPTEMBER POP-UP ARTS NEWSLETTER
Spring in Sydney is lovely… jasmine blooming, wildflowers exploding, sun mostly shining, magpies eyeing you off and thinking about swooping – or just swooping. If you are looking for an excuse to spend a few Spring days in the mountains, here it is. If you can draw, even just a little, even better! Find out all the details online below. The beauty of this Sketchbook Prize is in producing a collection of work, not just one work. I loved looking at the finished books last year and could see judging the winner a difficult task. 2013 was won by Glebe resident, Robert Shepherd. Masters of Sex

Posters from Masters of Sex series
Based on the biography of Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the couple who taught America how to love. This is a clever, sexy, fascinating and totally engaging drama series. Well scripted, well acted and perfectly styled. Set in the late 50s to early 60s, what adds to the interest of the subject matter – the science of sex – is the mores of the time in which this is all set. I love it! Last year the series received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Drama Series – and well deserved if that matters.

Robyn Stacey. Guest Relations Brisbane

Until 02 August 2014

Room 2418 Marriott Brisbane (Mess) by Robyn Stacey

This series has grown from its Melbourne beginnings early last year, then later in the year a Sydney series was shown. Now Stacey has created new works reflecting Brisbane through her unique and highly detailed camera obscura photographs. The artist has been invited by the Museum of Brisbane to show a more indepth series next year reflecting both historic and contemporary aspects of this lovely city. Make time to visit this show as the gallery is only open a few days a week. There are no photoshop tricks and although this is such an old and simple technique, there is extreme diligence, patience and craft to each of these large scale photographs. Stunning!

Rodney Pople. Lie of the Land

Until 17 August 2014

Simba by Rodney Pople

You will be slightly mad to miss this show. The scale of the artworks, all painted photographs on linen, the wonderful texture of the paint on their surface and , the gaze of the animals in the first room. Then there is the conflicting mixture of emotions one feels when viewing Pople’s works in the back rooms. His work comments on his feelings towards the church, colonial conquest, imperialism. There is darkness and light, horror and beauty. You will certainly leave this show with something. A terrific story written by Susan Chenery was recently published about Pople and his work. Stephen Dupont. White Sheet Series No.1

Until 03 August 2014

I saw this impressive exhibition in Melbourne earlier this year when it was at Edmund Pearce Gallery. For all you Sydneysiders it is a pleasure to have this tour to Dupont’s home town. Portraits of pilgrims and sadhus attending India’s Kumbh Mela festival. Beautiful prints, all hand bordered by the artist with antique Indian fabric wood blocks and archival inks. Only 4 in each series and none will be the same. Dupont has always engaged with his images and subjects beyond the photographs themselves. He keeps diaries and journals, often with quotes and stories handwritten by the subjects he photographs. In this series each image comes with a copy of the diary entry page related to each sitter. Not to miss!

Life Interrupted: Personal Diaries from World War 1

Until 21 September

The State Library began collecting diaries of soldiers, nurses, doctors, stretcher-bearers, journalists from 1918. This extraordinary exhibition shows the diaries and reveals their stories. Some full of hope, some full of longing, some full of fear and horror. The war affected everybody and this is one way we can only try to imagine that time. A well presented and curated exhibition. Still from 20,000 Days on Earth. Documentary on Nick Cave.

I loved the Nick Cave documentary 20,000 Days On Earth and was lucky to see this at the Festival Opening Night. You don’t even have to be a fan (although I am). I also attended the Premier of The Rover, David Michod’s new film. Michod’s first film, Animal Kingdom, is a more powerful and a better constructed film I think, than his new release. He does maintain energy and tension, plus the sound is great. Also the landscape is both beautiful and bleak. But the story is difficult to follow at times and ideas at times tenuous. Could anyone understand Robert Pattinson? I agree with Paul Byrnes’ review here for SMH.

MY FAVOURITE TV SERIES OF THE MONTH just because…
VEEP

Veep Trailer Image

VEEP is Selena Meyer, the fictional Vice President of the United States played by Julie Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld). This is a breath of fresh air from all the murder and seriousness of current TV. What a relief to have a laugh! Funny, clever, fast, witty, smutty – Louis-Dreyfus can convey much humour with a very small facial expression. The swearing, insults and crude analogies are non-stop so if you don’t like bad language best not tune in. Otherwise, do yourself a favour…A new HBO series.

Red Obsession

Another great documentary I missed at the cinema last year, but caught up on in the last couple of weeks.  I loved the tours of the great chateaux of Bordeaux and the story of China’s growing love of wine – very expensive Bordeaux wines in particular – and how owning these wines is becoming a status symbol for the Chinese rich.  Let’s just say a $3000 Penfolds Grange is merely a quaffer for these players.

February Pop-Up Arts Newsletter – back on track for 2014
Swimming at Clovelly, walking the hills of Paddington, early mornings in Centennial Park near the tea tree swamp, driving anywhere in the country, my frangipani tree dropping its lovely flowers all over the back stairs, art, photography, my two daughters back home from all their travels, a new year – I like the sound of 2014. Here’s a few more good things to include…

OPENING THIS WEEK
(Drawing)…

Wings of Desire / Der Himmel uber Berlin – a German & Australian collaboration in Melbourne & Sydney

17 – 21 Feb OPENING in Sydney Thurs 20 Feb 6-8pm

Curated by Sophie Weiser (Berlin) & David Corbet (DNA Projects, Sydney)

l-r Invitation; artwork by Richie Culver; artwork by Petros Sianos

A collaboration of 20 young emerging artists from Germany and Australia. The brief was working on one particular type of paper known as ‘laid paper’. For those not in the know, laid paper is very course, old fashioned handmade paper. Very tricky to work with as inks bleed quickly and easily. But for many, it is also considered a beautiful base paper on which to work. However, none of these young artists had ever used such old school paper. This curiously lovely exhibition comes from curator, Sophie Weiser, wanting to see what can happen when you challenge the artistic talent of a group of young artists, all more or less the same age, with a paper medium they had never used before.

Artist Talk Sat 15 Mar @ 2pm

Morning , 2014 Justine Varga

Quiet, restful images. Varga, known for her minimal compositions, now presents new work that takes you to the periphery of recognition – ‘playing at the edge of vision’ as the artist says. Since graduating from art school back in 2007, this talented young photographer has continued to make her mark on the photographic art world. Empty spaces have never looked so full of ambiguity and promise. What are they? Where are they? You will be captivated.

FOR THE MARCH DIARY…

New Book Release (available now)
+ In Conversations (for the Diary)

The Dealer is the Devil – An Insiders History of the Aboriginal Art Trade.

Written by Adrian Newstead (with Ruth Hessey). Published by Brandl & Schlesinger.

L-R Book cover, The Dealer is the Devil; Opening Night Speeches with front l-r Stuart Purvis; Adrian Newstead, Maria Bashir, Governor NSW (Photo by Jim Anderson)

A warts and all, fast-paced, compelling and provocative account by one of the country’s leading dealers in Aboriginal art, Adrian Newstead – a character well placed to tell such a story. The Dealer is the Devil is the story of the modern Aboriginal art movement and art market – an important chapter of contemporary Australian art history. Within the space of just forty years, Indigenous artists transformed the perception of their culture from something of strictly ethnographic interest into one of the great internationally acclaimed contemporary art movements. What a read! Grab a copy if you can.

PHOTOGRAPHY in March…

Patricia Casey. Little Secrets

04 – 22 Mar OPENING Tue 04 Mar 6-8pm

Part of Art Month Sydney.

l-r The Illusionist, Patricia Casey; The Reclusive Impulse, Patricia Casey

Delicate hand embroidered photographs on cotton, these are unique, highly collectable and exquisite. The artist can take anywhere from 10-40 hours on each artwork. Using perfect tiny backstitch and French knots, Casey traces the outline of branches, blossoms and leaves, reminiscent of nerve pathways and the circulatory system, the secret hidden worlds of the human body. Casey says ‘we all have an inner core that we don’t reveal…little secrets that we keep to ourselves..a mental landscape inaccessible to others’. A beautiful collection of portraits and a not to miss exhibition.

ART & SCULPTURE in March…

Sally Simpson. Venerated Remains

19 Mar – 12 Apr OPENING Thur 20 Mar 6-8pm

Details of 3 sculptures, Venerated Remains – fish bones, lace, mud, gold leaf, Sally Simpson
If you missed the extraordinary work of this artist during her two Canberra shows, then make note of this Sydney exhibition. Simpson’s artworks are a response to the environment and sites undergoing change. The materials used in these sculptures include materials she collected at Lake Mokoan in Victoria – discarded irrigation pipe, fish bones and mud. Wrapping the delicate objects in vintage lace and finely applied gold leaf, this work is a reflection of the fragility of the land in flux. Her drawings of mummified fish are simply beautiful. Everything is strangely beautiful – a compelling exhibition.

I love to check out the free stuff and am curious about ‘The Merchant’s Store’ – strangely scaled interactive architecture installation at Darling Harbour; Paradiso Terrace Bar at Sydney Town Hall; and the Christian Boltankski ‘Chance’ installation at Carriageworks. The Spiegeltent has so many great bands and music nights on offer you are mad not to go to one of them – even if it just to be inside such a wonderful structure. A big program this year.

THE SECRET WEEKEND GETAWAY…

Wobby Beach House

L-R  Wobby Beach House from the water; looking over the pool towards Brooklyn & Dangar Island on a calm evening; poolside on a sunny afternoon

Right on the water…catch a ferry over from Brooklyn or take your own boat!  What sets this adorable cottage apart is that it has a pool right on the water – you can swim any time of day or night. I have stayed here a few times and everytime the view and atmosphere is totally and most wonderfully consuming.  Bushwalking is possible and involves an odd little trek behind houses until you get to the track, but this in itself is a fabulous adventure.  Just catch the ferry over with all your goods and the jetty is really close to the house so a fun 100m walk.  Great with kids, or leave them at home.
