The Red Room, Customs House, 31 Alfred Street, Circular Quay, Sydney Open Daily Free to the Public
ABOUT Exhibition: Produced & curated by Sandy Edwards of ARTHERE, Customs House at Circular Quay is hosting this beautiful and meditative exhibition of large scale black & white portraits of the Dalai Lama, featured in the Red Room Gallery on the ground floor of this magnificent historic building.
The photographer, David Roberts, believes he was offered an extraordinary gift when during the 2007 Australian tour the Dalai Lama agreed to sit for a personal portrait session. For many years before, photographers had been requesting an audience with the Dalai Lama and all were refused. Roberts does not really know why his request was granted. Perhaps it was his gracious request. Perhaps it was the unusual camera equipment he uses – the largest field camera available which has a negative plate of approx. 20x24inches & bellows reaching to 1.4metres. Perhaps serendipity and good fortune were at play. Whatever the reason, the outcome is an intimate collection of superb portraits of one of the great spiritual leaders of our time – His Holiness, The Dalai Lama. David Roberts is represented by Point Light Gallery in Sydney www.pointlight.com.au
