INTRODUCING…
Billy’s Shop – T-Shirts & Cards
Beautiful photographs donated by Robert McFarlane & Jacqui Dean

William & Bear, 1999 Giraffes T-Shirt, Image by Jacqui Dean
by Robert McFarlane

Billy is Robert’s son. Robert is a widely acclaimed Australian photographer whose love of the arts is parallelled only by his for love for Billy. Billy is 22 years old and has autism. To help Billy develop a sense of independence, Robert and Billy’s mother have set up this small online business, where Billy can manage the store, selling T-Shirts and cards, amongst other gifts. Designs include a special limited selection of Robert’s work (including this beloved image above of his son Billy) and that of award winning Sydney photographer, Jacqui Dean (her Giraffe image sampled on children’s T-shirt above).Buying from Billy’s Shop will, as Robert says, "help a young man on his journey to an independent life".
The photograph above by Robert is one of my many personal favourites – tenderness, love, pride, protectiveness & melancholy are powerful emotional responses to this superbly framed portrait.
Please check out Billy’s website: www.cafepress.com.au/robertmcfarlane

NOW FOR THOSE SYDNEY SUMMER GARDEN WALKS…
Wendy Whiteley Garden, Lavender Bay – explore top to bottom, then take a walk along the boardwalk to Luna Park. I love the figurines hiding in the shrubs along this walkway too. Pity council has now made it difficult to get onto the old railway track – I loved it up there and great for photos.
The Gardens of Vaucluse House, Vaucluse – one of my favourite Historic Houses Trust properties and a beautiful garden to wander around (for free, only costs $8 if you want to go into the house). The colonial kitchen garden is so lovely you just want to collect a basketful of veges.
Cooper Park, Woollahra – what a secret of rainforest entanglements hide behind those tennis courts! If you have never been on this walk then you are in for a wonderful surprise.
Any beach, north or south – but special favourites close to home are Bronte Pool & Clovelly. For Harbour beaches I love Nielson Bay and love the updated Watson’s Bay pool, especially at high tide when diving from the boardwalk into deep clear water is a thrill.
Bradley’s Head Fort Tunnel, Bradley’s Head Road, Mosman (just past entrance to Taronga Zoo) – there are plenty of old fortification tunnels around the Harbour to explore if you’re game – this one is a scary favourite. Built in 1840-42 and upgraded by James Barnett in 1871, this is no garden walk, but fun in a dark-black-hole kind of way. Go with someone who does NOT drop the torch.

I said this same para in my last newsletter, so if you are interested and didn’t get to read, here are my thoughts on Kings Cross – my own local stomping ground. Hope you can make it to the Sunday talk. It will be lively and fun for sure.
Some people visit Kings Cross, some stay well away and some of us live here. A colourful, diverse, interesting, funny and sometimes sad story unfolds every day around this neighbourhood and for those of us who live here, it is just that, our neighbourhood. Who remembers Jocelyn and her Polaroid camera? A deserved winning photograph of a warmly remembered character. I am pleased to have been selected this year with my photograph of Mohammed Sali, owner and head chef of Malabar Indian Restaurant (just near the Coca Cola sign). Thirty photographs in total reflecting the life and character of the Cross. Curated by Sandy Edwards. The Storytelling event (to be held on the last Sunday of the exhibition) will be held on the roof-top terrace bar. Come along and enjoy the stories, the conversation, the photographs and the view!

OPEN GARDEN EVENT ON SUNDAY…
Ian & Tom’s Garden in Redfern, Sydney
Part of Open Gardens Australia November Calender

ian toms garden

Back garden at Ian & Tom’s

For the very first time, two very special inner city Sydney gardens are part of the Open Gardens Australia calender. One garden in particular to discover is this little beauty in Redfern. A small tropical oasis hides behind this lovely Georgian terrace. Begonias, philodendrons, bromeliads in the front and a little back yard garden full of epiphytes including ripsalis, epiphyllums, tillandsias – I just wanted to type all those wonderful botanic words for you to read and just try saying them aloud – planted around an established orange tree. Fifteen years of ‘green thumb’ love brings us a sustainable city garden that relies only on rainwater. Plant sales too!

ONE MORE little THING…
With the last days of Spring enjoy walks in three of my favourite local Darlingurst parks

The Pine Grove walk in Centennial Park – beautiful in the early morning with the sun streaming from the east or the yellows of the afternoon with the sun streaming from the west – long shadows, beautiful light, smelling faintly of pine needles.
The Rushcutter’s Bay to Darling Point walk
– sit on the little jetty for awhile, or the end sandstone seawall and watch the boats drift by. I love the chink-chink sound of the sail boats as you walk along the seawall and the crazy playing of the dogs (and there are many) along the way.
McKell Park at the end of Darling Point Road.
The ruins and grounds of a once grand home, this park is a Sydney secret I may regret sharing. Forget about the bullnose sharks that could be nearby and dive from the jetty into crystal clear harbour water. I love this little park and the flowers are blooming everywhere. Picnic perfect.
Goodbye Spring…

Pop-Up November Arts Newsletter. One more lovely month of spring to enjoy before summer grabs us! Have you visited the Botanical Gardens (in Sydney) lately? Bursting with colour and flowers. RECOMMENDED EXHIBITION & GALLERY TO DISCOVER…
CROSS ART PROJECTS –
Big Family: Keeping Art, Country & Culture Strong.
Assoc. of Northern Kimberley & Arnhem Aboriginal Artists (ANKAAA)
Current exhibition until 17 November

Inline images 4
Big Family celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Association of Northern Kimberley and Arnhem Aboriginal Artists (ANKAAA), representing fifty art centres and artist co-ops ranging across the northern Australia.  It brings together works by highly respected artists – cultural custodians and leaders – within this regional family.
Big Family 2 is a commemorative ‘book’ of etchings by 30 artists, available in the gallery.
Cross Arts Projects is a tiny gallery tucked away in Llankelly Lane, behind Macleay Street in Kings Cross.  The lane, vibrant with cafes, restaurants and bars, is also surrounded by many lovely art-deco gems, including the old Metro theatre opp the laneway and gallery.
The exhibitions, discussions and public talks in the gallery are always intellectually engaging and they are free!  Finding this little beauty is one of the special little ‘art secrets’ of the Cross.

Pop-Up Publicity October Arts Newsletter. Witty wordpoems, sculpture, secret Sydney spaces, weaving workshops, food as art and Paris!

Pop-Up October Arts Newsletter. Some days its sunny and some days it snows – that seems to be Spring in Sydney so far and it has been wonderful. The first of the Jacaranda blossoms are starting to burst and soon the city will be awash with their beautiful blue. Plenty of lovely shows to check out and more for the diary! Wordsmith Richard Tipping will entertain you in Redfern at Sandy Edwards new photomedia space; Sydney reveals a few hidden treasures in Hyde Park; stunning contemporary Aboriginal sculpture to draw you back from the Bondi sculpture walk to one of my favourite galleries (a great place to start or finish your day); a nostalgic trip to Paris is highly recommended and good shows for your arts diary for November. This is my photo (above), amongst the 22 finalists in this years show. These gardens deserve heritage protection and should be preserved. I love they are only 12km from the CBD – another reason for protection from the neighbouring cemetery, wanting over 60% of the land to extend
(a trip to these Chinese Gardens in Matraville is well worth it – they are like a trip to another world)
Also, would anyone like my photograph – it would look good in a garden or cafe? 3mx2m on vinyl.

MY RECOMMENDATION FOR OCTOBER…
Old Paris. Eugene Atget

Art Gallery NSW.  Until 04 November
www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/exhibitions/eugene-atget

Left to right: Eugène Atget Marchard d’abat jour, rue Lepic 1899-1900, albumen photograph; Boulevard de Strasbourg 1912, albumen photograph; Rue Hautefeuille, 6th arrondissement 1898, albumen photograph

I am sure everyone knows about this show, but who has visited?
If you love history, Paris, b&w photography, stories and beautiful imagery, don’t miss it.
I loved this exhibition for many reasons.  To see old Paris and note how much of it was demolished to create the lovely wide boulevards we all love about Paris today.  Also, to see the people, the streets, the architecture and the working people of Paris at the time Atget photographed it all.  Also to know that Man Ray bought an extensive collection of these wonderful images and many are from Man Ray’s personal collection.  Plus, to see these original and rare contact prints from a masterful documentary photographer.  Nostalgic, romantic, fascinating, intriguing and beautifully composed photographs.  My only suggestion would be to take a magnifying glass to view the details that much better!

Historic Chinese Market Gardens, Matraville (near La Perouse). Cassandra French

Launching on Friday night, this is my photo above selected as one of 22 finalists for this years exhibition in Hyde Park. (I was also a finalist in 2009 with ‘Cooking Up a Storm’) This is from a series I took out at the gardens, which are under serious threat to be taken over by the neighbouring cemetery. What amazes me with these gardens is that they are so close to the CBD and not on the fringe of Sydney’s urban sprawl. They make up the history and fabric of the city and should be protected. You can almost smell the parsley and bok choy. Everyone should take a visit to the gardens in Bunnerong Road, Matraville. Also make sure to visit Hyde Park. To see all finalists:

Pop-Up Publicity August Arts Newsletter. Recommendations, highlights and upcoming exhibitions to note

Pop-Up August Arts Newsletter 2012
July just got away from me, so I am getting in early for August. There is always plenty to fill an arts diary so here are some highlights, recommendations and upcoming exhibitions to note. There are a few favourite highlights from the Biennale (AGNSW: beautiful miniature trees cut from paper shopping bags; a giant urban landscape in talcum powder; hundred’s of tiny filled artbooks made from what look like cigarette papers. MCA: hundreds of bottles handpainted on the inside with black ink and snake motifs; sewing project from 1000 spools of coloured cotton. PIER 7: the clacking sound of the bamboo installation; and walking amongst the strange reams of paper – this only makes sense if you walk amongst the paper. I haven’t been to Cockatoo Island yet but have read mixed reviews) Other recommendations are Customs House, a must visit space especially with its current new interactive installation; Ochre Art from the Kimberley’s & Arnhem Land to inspire; visit Margaret Olley’s studio & home and three stunning upcoming shows to watch out for…

Only one month until its officially spring, but I love the new buds blooming on the branches of the tree outside my window and the jasmine in the garden is loaded with new buds eager to open. Life and hope…

It’s also time to update my database and know who wants to continue receiving my newsletters and updates and who couldn’t give a fig. Please click on link and unsubscribe OR friend me on facebook (Cassie French – Pop-Up Publicity) OR subscribe to my blog. I love the arts and I love to let others know a few secrets around town the papers or blogs may not tell you.

Best wishes

It is and interactive computer experience of what Sydney foreshore, from Barangaroo to Woolloomoolloo, was like for the Gadigal prior to the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Technology is a clever tool. This is very realistic and stimulates imagination in a way history books do not. ABOUT
In 2010 photographer Greg Weight was visiting Margaret Olley regularly, photographing her latest paintings for her final exhibition. See you tomorrow at two were the last words Olley spoke to Weight – she died that night. Now one year since her death at age 89, Greg Weight shares further images he made of her creative hub. He has captured in this series of important documentary photographs something so much more than a recording. They appear like still life paintings themselves and reveal to us the very heart of Olley’s artistic world – her home and studio. These are intimate, beautiful and still images of a place I could only dream of having entered. I love artist studios and am thankful to Greg he recorded Margaret Olley’s studio with such tenderness and affection and I feel privileged to now visit. Highly recommended!

GALLERY TO DISCOVER…
The Distillery 115 Crown Street Darlinghurst
http://www.the-distillery.com.au

ABOUT Not quite a gallery, but it does feels like a mini museum of printing presses and design. When I first saw this place from across the street I thought it was another bar. I was intrigued and crossed over to discover a printing business – thriving, adventurous, creative and exquisite. The website states "We’re inspired by old-fashioned values, heritage and vintage design with soul". Apparently they love visitors too! I must have a thing for fonts and I love vintage and history, generally most old stuff. Paper so heavy and pearly; text etched so deeply and perfectly; colours, graphics and typeface to make you swoon; and four giant antique printing presses in perfect working order. Order some cards, invitations, nametags, whatever. Maybe get married so you can order some gorgeous cards. Or just drop in. I love this place and recommend you discover this one…

PS. Just a few doors from Conny Dietzschold Gallery (exhibitions.connydietzscholdgallery.com). Another interesting gallery to discover, or revisit if you have not been for awhile.
