Ben Ali Ong. 1000 Years Beside Myself. Until 06 October
Boutwell-Draper Gallery, 82-84 George Street, Redfern 2016
Image #07 Ben Ali Ong
Inspired by mythology, dreams and symbolism, for Ben Ali Ong the importance of the narrative is on mood, metaphor and emotion. Darkly romantic, sensual and exceptionally beautiful, this new series has found a proud new home in Boutwell-Draper Gallery, Redfern. Large scale prints in the upstairs gallery.
Image #07 from the series. Ella Dreyfus
This is a superbly beautiful narrative study of growing up – not to miss! Also, if you can make it to Ella’s talk on Saturday you will not be disappointed – she speaks beautifully about her work.
For more background on Ella Dreyfus please visit her website. To listen to an interview go to ABC RN Life Matters. For feature story look out for Art Monthly Australia October issue.
Shelly Beach. Tim Hixson
This wonderful photographer documents the 91 roads that all end at Sydney’s northern beaches between Palm Beach and Manly. Set out in geographical order the photographic print is 22 metres long and reveals the special places and landmarks that define each location. Tim Hixson is one of our best beach photographers – head north and check this one out. You will find Tim in the gallery each weekend.
Historic Chinese Market Gardens, Matraville (near La Perouse). Cassandra French
Launching on Friday night, this is my photo above selected as one of 22 finalists for this years exhibition in Hyde Park. (I was also a finalist in 2009 with ‘Cooking Up a Storm’) This is from a series I took out at the gardens, which are under serious threat to be taken over by the neighbouring cemetery. What amazes me with these gardens is that they are so close to the CBD and not on the fringe of Sydney’s urban sprawl. They make up the history and fabric of the city and should be protected. You can almost smell the parsley and bok choy. Everyone should take a visit to the gardens in Bunnerong Road, Matraville. Also make sure to visit Hyde Park. To see all finalists:
Reduce Need. Richard Tipping
Richard Tipping is well known for his humorous interventions in the world of public signs, such as his iconic No Understanding Any Time now in the collection of the National Gallery. This is his third solo exhibition in a year and will feature new works and a few handpicked from the past, all with a political take. Works will include photography and installation. Word poems to amuse, provoke, entertain and make you think. Not to miss!
