Pop-Up November Arts Newsletter. A colourful arty month ahead…

Pop-Up November Arts Newsletter Sydney in November is really beautiful. The blue of jacarandas, the red of flame trees, the scent of star jasmine, tomatoes ripening in the garden, basil and parsley growing in pots on the kitchen windowsill, flowers and blooms everywhere… There has been a little smoke too. Here are some fabulous shows and art events to tempt you inside. A colourful arty month ahead for all of us. Cheers. Cassie 0416 209 391

Ten Arthere artists approach the notion of place very differently.  Gritty, soft, empty, busy, strange, romantic, delicate, beautiful, observant – all evocative of memory and places we may feel we have all visited or passed through.

In the south of Italy, near Puglia, olive groves stretch in every direction. Some are over 1000 years old (listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Register) with younger groves 200-600 years old (protected by regional law). All tended by hand for over 40 generations, this exceptionally beautiful exhibition reflects on the importance of nurture and care.  Jane photographed these groves over a period of 4 years and through every season.  There will be some video footage also. A restorative and beautiful collection of photographs – all shot on film and combined as triptychs.  Digital prints.

Does the idea of tall poppy syndrome even still exist in Australia?  In 2010 two American women photographers headed out across the state of New South Wales to discover for themselves and record in what they found in photographs.  What resulted was a the launch of this amazing book and a debut exhibition in New York at ClampArt Gallery in January 2013.  It is very exciting to have this show now debut in Aus, firstly in Melbourne before touring around the rest of the country (dates to be announced).

Mid August Pop-Up News Announcement Hi. I am passing on this newsletter announcement below from Sandy Edwards for ARTHERE. Come along to final drinks tomorrow (Saturday 17 August) in the Gallery. This is not only the closing of Luke Hardy’s fun show, it is also the closing of Sandy’s ArtHere Gallery Space in Redfern. Her 12 month contract is up and in this time she has curated 17 exciting exhibitions for 21 different artists, celebrated a book launch and hosted many private art events. Outside of the Gallery Sandy has mentored just as many photographers, judged two key Sydney Photographic Art Prizes (Sydney Life & the Kings Cross Photography Prize), worked and curated shows for Stills Gallery (with whom she has closely worked for over 20 years), given photographic talks for Michael Reid Gallery and been an amazing and inspirational friend and colleague. Come and celebrate. ARTHERE will be ready once more to source interesting and unique venues in Sydney to host exhibitions. More in the newsletter. Until Pop-Up in September… cheers. Fun, slightly kitsch and a little bit sexy – this latest work by Hardy takes us into the dimly lit, echoey ambience of the karaoke lounge…around closing time. A trippy mix of fake brands, banal lyrics and braced teeth. Who ever knows how the night might end up? A slight departure from the artists more sensual and mysterious storytelling style (Yuki Onna; Dragonfly), there is still a narrative to be found here and it is up to the viewer to create it.

This collection of powerfully engaging hand made sculptures explore the relationship of humans to the land. Created from collected objects and organic material sourced from around the property where the artist lives, Simpson’s trademark skill is in the stitching and braiding she always uses in her work. These human-like figures kneel, some with palms upturned – are they passive? Are they wounded? Are they challenging? I know I think they are all beautiful. Sydney Moderns Exhibition at the Art Gallery NSW

George Street, Sydney, 1934. (detail) by Herbert Madham

Portrait of Lucie Beynis, 1929 (detail) by Grace Crowley

Sydney in the 1920s and 30s was a place of great change. By the 20s the population had swelled to 1million and the Harbour bridge opened in the 30s. Art and ideas exploded and Sydney between the wars was destination. This is a thoroughly enjoyable exhibition – as much about Sydney’s history as it is about this explosive and creative period of making art. Margaret Preston, Grace Cossington Smith and Harold Cazneaux are amongst my favourites. Painting, woodblock prints, photography & sculpture all feature. Untitled #02, Caroline McLean-Foldes (above)         Line of Sight #01,  Mim Stirling (below)

Inspired by the enigma that is Japan, these two photographers present unique images from the perspective of their own cultural identity.  Sharing a common history in cinema studies, both Caroline and Mim reinterpret Japan very differently.  Caroline’s imagery is ethereal, painterly and delicate.  Mim’s is taken from period Japanese Samurai films and their Spaghetti Western remakes, combining the two classics to create a narrative between the two worlds.  Be sure to experience this lovely exhibition.

A series of photographs taken in Sydney and Beijing exploring the places where the natural world and human culture intersect.  The landscapes are magical, the reflections shimmer with colour and the ‘best uscale duck’ restaurant gorgeously entertaining.  The photographs are from Beijing and Sydney, yet it feels impossible to tell which city appears before you.  A very pleasing exhibition indeed.  2 Danks Street won’t disappoint when your visit as there are also 3 other galleries running highly recommended photographic exhibitions.

Sharon Zwi (below)

This extraordinary collection of portraits reflects a true labour of love by Sydney photographer, Sharon Zwi.  Each portrait is made up of a grid of 25 images showing the life of the sitter from babyhood to now.  Some famous and well known – many known to Sharon from her local community.  People she admires and feels have made a positive contribution to society.  There are politicians, judges, lecturers, feminists, teachers, scientists, human rights advocates, writers, filmmakers, a book shop owner and even her local fruit shop owner.  Every portrait pulls you in.  One of my very favourites is Margaret Whitlam – compiled by her daughters and the photographer.  Other poignant images are both Sharon’s parents – made even more so given her dad recently passed away.  Each portrait has their story underneath.  You have to search this exhibition out a little (downstairs at Fisher Sydney Uni amongst the rare book collection), but a very worthwhile excursion.  A must visit exhibition.

Paint it Black. Rodney Pople
Until 14 April

Parliament House, 2013 Rodney Pople

Pople is not afraid to shock and he is not making art for everyone to like him, but he does have something to say. Some of the work makes for uncomfortable viewing, but each has its own references to hypocrisy, tragedy or exploitation. This new series presents imagery of Port Arthur, as well as religious and political institutions. His combination of oil painting and photography delivers, at times, astonishing beauty.
