The Degas sculpture was ‘widely denounced for its atypical realist portrayal of femininity and non-traditional use of media’. Pople, not afraid to be a little controversial himself, boldly presents these new works.

live music. A real buzz of creativity fills this lovely space. You might even catch the food markets.

After replenishing and feeling robust the aim is to now head down to Circular Quay.

CUSTOMS HOUSE hosts THREE superb photographic exhibitions that will absorb you for some time.

You will want an hour or so. The library levels close at 4pm on Sat & Sun, 7pm through the week.

MCA is hosting an outside free event today on the forecourt
at 2pm (& Sunday 3 June at 11am & 2pm).

Catch the entertaining ‘Dachshund United Nations’ setup by Bennett Miller.

47 Dachshund’s representing UN delegates will somehow debate their role as a risk management organisation.
Sounds chaotic and highly entertaining. Apologies now to all those dachshund lovers out there, but they are just not my favourite dog –

often way to pampered and territorial. But I think their personalities will prove perfect in their starring roles today.

Then to finish off the day stay around the harbour’s edge for the Vivid Lights which start at 6pm – what a great way to keep you out of the house!
Recommended for a late afternoon aperitif or evening soiree, my favourite haunts around here are the Bar at the End of the Wharf at Sydney Theatre Company;
the new MCA cafe; or for more lively venues I would say the Opera Bar or (the best) The Hero of Waterloo.

In Sydney during May, photography takes over the city, writers will be lurking everywhere and the festival of light gets us all out of the house and into the city on a cold Autumn night.
So check out the programs for Head On Festival 4 May – 3 June; Sydney Writers’ Festival 14 – 20 May; Vivid Sydney 25 May – 11 June.
The Head On Photo Festival launched last Friday night at Customs House to a crowd of nearly 2000 people. It was buzzing and bustling over 3 levels. Did anyone actually get to see the three fantastic photographic exhibitions launched at Customs House the same night? Make sure you get back to for a quieter and more library like experience, with more room to view the works and time to enjoy the fabulous public space this beautiful heritage building offers all of us for FREE. Customs House (opp the ferries at Circular Quay to those who have never been) is one of my favourite city haunts… Please discover it for yourself (This can be my secret gallery to discover for the month of May). Peter Elfes has been documenting Lake Eyre and desert surrounds for over 4 years. Customs House have totally relaunched this exhibition from 4 May with new prints, images and installations to enhance the experience of this stunning exhibition. These aerial photographs of Australia’s desert heartland are full of tremendous poetic beauty. Lake Eyre will be handed back to the Ularaka Arabunna people in a huge ceremony on 22 May and will in future be referred to by its proper traditional name of Kati-thandra. This is of national interest and significance.

The Muckaty community, 100km north of Tennant Creek NT, is the planned land for the federal governments nuclear waste dump. This community is not giving in without a tremendously powerful fight. My Secret Gallery to Discover…

This is like visiting a gorgeous decorative arts museum, but you can buy the stuff!
Vintage clothes & accessories, French antiques, jewellery, porcelain (& more!)

The best vintage range of stores are found downstairs!
My recent purchases have been a 1940’s snakeskin handbag, a 1950’s cotton party dress and a white cotton broderie anglaise shirt for my daughter. I have also been coveting, but with no where to put them (or perhaps afford them): a 19th C pale blue French enamel bathtub (exquisite); lots of 1940’s, 50’s & 60’s dresses, hats, gloves, shoes; the prettiest porcelain teacups and plates ever; gigantic timber trestle tables; nic-nacs & bric-a-brac galore; plus beautiful vintage jewellery. Oh, I love this place. It is not a stuffy old smelly mess of an antique junk shop (though I like those sometimes too). This is an elegant experience of curiosity, beauty, humour, ridiculousness and fun. The coffee shop sells Allpress coffee, great light lunches and some of the best cakes and pastries to rival Bourke Street Bakery (maybe they are from Bourke Street Bakery?)
